The “300” in 300SL represents the three-liter gasoline engine in the car, while the meaning of “SL” was not officially clarified at the time. Though company officials referred to it as either "Super Leicht" or"Sport Leicht" (Super Light or Sport Light). Mercedes' website used the term "Sport Leicht" until 2017, but after the chance discovery of old company archives containing the "Super Leicht" definition, it was clarified that SL actually represented "Super Leicht" and was subsequently changed to reflect this.

Until the 1970s, many cars were produced with a side mirror only on the driver's side as standard. The passenger side mirror was available as an optional feature. For this reason, many 300SL Gullwings only have a side mirror on the driver's side.

Due to 300SL owners having difficulty getting in and out of the vehicle, Mercedes later enabled the steering wheel to tilt 90 degrees with the help of a pin. This provided a more spacious environment when entering the vehicle.
